Field of Lights Salcombe

We were thrilled to host an incredible gathering of local businesses at the Church House Inn, Churchstow, for our inaugural Business Club event of 2024.

The evening kicked off with an inspiring presentation by Phil Ward, the Fundraising Chair for Salcombe RNLI .

Phil unveiled the exciting plans for the ‘Field of Lights’ by renowned British artist Bruce Munro, scheduled for October 2024 – January 2025 in East Portlemouth and the fundraising opportunity for the RNLI and for local businesses in the area.

He detailed the monumental scale of this project and its potential to significantly boost visitor numbers to Salcombe and the surrounding area during the winter months and why Bruce Munro chose Salcombe for the installation (he also has a similar one in Uluru Australia!

Phil also shared his aspirations for extending the tourist season, while highlighting that this could become the largest fundraising event for the RNLI nationwide.

The potential benefits for local businesses are tremendous. The discussions about community and group involvement in the installation, as well as the intricate logistics of the event, were particularly enlightening.

Renowned artist British Bruce Munro, whose global acclaim is well-established (there is a permanent installation of the Field of Light at Uluru in Australia) , has generously donated the ‘Field of Lights’.

This gesture is his way of giving back to the local community and expressing gratitude to the Salcombe lifeboat crews, a sentiment rooted in his deep connections with Salcombe. Having worked at Dusters in the past, Bruce’s ties with Salcombe and his fond memories have played a pivotal role in this initiative.
