Free Taxi Driver Training for Safer Communities

South Hams District Council will provide a free training course to raise awareness about Child Sexual Exploitation and how to protect vulnerable people. The course is aimed at taxi drivers and will take place on 7 February 2018.

This is the first of several Child Sexual Exploitation and Safeguarding Courses that will be run throughout the year under the Council’s Community Safety Partnership. The same session will also be held at West Devon Borough Council’s offices. During the sessions, taxi drivers will be taught how to spot the signs of Child Sexual Exploitation or vulnerable people at risk, how to report any concerns, and where to report them.

Community Safety Partnership Lead, Cllr Tom Holway said: “We cannot emphasise enough how important and valuable the Child Sexual Exploitation and Safeguarding course is. For the past two years in which we have run the course, we have had positive feedback from the taxi drivers that attended. Most of the drivers were not aware of how to spot warning signs or how to report an incident.

“It is important for the drivers to learn about safeguarding the vulnerable because they are the ears and eyes of our community. We look forward to their attendance and very much appreciate that they give up their own time to attend.”

This course is one of many that take place around the country. It is designed to show taxi drivers what Child Sexual Exploitation is, the tactics that perpetrators use, how safeguarding can involve the taxi trade unknowingly in trafficking and how to report a concern.

The first course for 2018 will be held in Totnes on 7 February, in the Repton Room at Follaton House. If you are a licensed taxi driver and you would like to get involved, please email Licensing@swdevon.gov.uk to reserve a place.
